Industry News Roundup (28-10-09)

October, 28th 2009 14:11

We’re back again with another (somewhat limited) news roundup for you today. There’s seemingly not much happening this morning of interest to the unsigned community but keep reading for a couple of titbits to keep you entertained this afternoon…

Following on from yesterday’s news that MySpace is making a move to further champion new music, there are some interesting opinions expressed in this Forbes Magazine article about MySpace repositioning itself in the global market as a ‘music hub’ and whether it’s too little, too late to save the service from being totally eclipsed by Facebook. In our opinion MySpace will always do what MySpace has done best, and that is provide artists with a recognised platform for promotion but if they can pull this reinvention out of the bag then it could mean big things for artists using it to promote themselves.

In other MySpace-related news, we have a brand spanking new English profile for you all to be friends with, check it out over at www.myspace.com/zimbalam, be our friend and get stuck in!

Finally, for some quite unrelated, news, you’re probably well aware that last night/this morning was the simultaneous world premiere of the Michael Jackson send off film, ‘This Is It’ and as we said, it’s not really related to your music career but it’s pretty big news all the same, so for more information on the various premieres around the globe, take your pick of the numerous stories here.

Music Industry News Roundup 27-10-2009

October, 27th 2009 14:52

Welcome to our new regular round up of music industry news. We’ve been following the recent goings on in the world of music and put them in here with links to the most relevant stories for artists looking to break into the industry. So, without much further ado…

It’s been announced that 2009 is a record year for single sales thanks to the rise of digital stores and accessibility for customers. The findings have been announced by the music industry body the BPI and you can read the full story on their website here. This is good news for those of you looking to put out a single and even better news in that it’s only October!

We also hear that BBC Introducing are looking at new ways of using their brand to bring the public’s attention to unsigned music. BBC audio and music development producer Martyn Davies told a seminar at Cardiff’s Swn music festival on Friday that they are in talks to offer services such as MySpace, Last.fm, Spotify and more ‘BBC Platforms’ were users can go to hear new music. Find out more over on The Unsigned Guide’s blog.

Meanwhile, Billboard have news that MySpace are launching a new promotional initiative to champion new music, the program will see five artists promoted across the MySpace music portfolio as ‘Introducing’ every three months. The details seem vague at the moment with the first new act being a Warner Music signing and the exact details of MySpace’s promotional commitment to the winning artists but we’ll keep an ear to the ground to see just how involved with ‘new music’ they’re going to be. To read the full details of the announcement, you can check out this article on the Billboard.biz website.

That’s it for today but check back for the latest news as often as we can compile it. If you have any tips for us, please get in touch; suggestion@zimbalam.com
